For 25 years, Sandhya Kolar has opened her heart to the many volunteers who joyfully assemble rice and bean packages for families in need. On the first Sunday of every month the Rice plus Project meets in the Vista Lobos Room in Carmel for a "bagging party."

BAGGING PARTIES

The first Sunday of each month our "family" of volunteers meets at the Vista Lobos Room in Carmel at 10AM to prepare food stuffs for distribution. Join us!

It all starts before the "Rice Bagging Party" begins. The rice and beans are ordered in advance from Lucky Supermarket. The day of packing about 3000 pounds of rice, several hundred pounds of beans, and other foods like tortillas, peanut butter, and canned goods are loaded into vehicles.

The vehicles then transport the goods to the Vista Lobos Room in Carmel, California where volunteers are gathered and ready to engage in a united spirit of giving charitable service. A human chain forms and the 50 pound bags of rice and beans are unloaded and passed from the vehicles into the building.

This all happens rain or shine.

Inside the Vista Lobos Room more volunteers separate the large bags of rice and beans into smaller bags that can be distributed to families in need. The food is all divided and boxed, and then returned back out of the building to waiting vehicles to be loaded and transported to various distribution points. This process repeats on the first Sunday of each month, and helps to feed between 1,000–1,500 people! Rice plus Project is a combined effort of volunteers who mingle, have fun, and celebrate the joy of giving.

This is the party!
