Our Vision

Our vision is to wipe out poverty in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties. This vision includes empowering women to start small business circles. By developing new skills they can create a higher standard of living for themselves and their families

We feed people in need

Over twenty-five years ago,

Carmel California resident Sandhya Kolar realized an overwhelming aspiration to begin helping the Salinas Valley field workers that struggled to provide food for their families. Sandyha purchased a fifty-pound sack of rice and, with help from her daughter, set about filling smaller bags that were donated to feed those in need.

What started as one woman's vision has become an endeavor that includes dozens of volunteers joining together to help realize her vision. The Rice plus Project has grown since its humble beginnings in a living room. Now, the first Sunday of the month devoted volunteers gather at the Vista Lobos Room in Camel to serve by bagging rice, and organizing other food staples for distribution. Once finished some of our volunteers load these care packages into their vehicles and distribute the food to families and others in need.

The efforts of the Rice plus Project provide the less fortunate with essentials such as:

  • Rice

  • Beans

  • Other food staples

  • Warm clothing in winter

  • Warm blankets

  • Other essentials to life

In addition to providing the donations listed above we also help with these life necessities:

  • Premie Baby Hats

  • Christmas Gifts

  • Furniture

  • Bedding

  • Toiletries
